What's Going On!

Norman and I have been working together for a while now. However, we’re having to back off on some of the “writing work” to prepare for a move. We’re planning to relocate to an area near St. Louis sometime this year or next. That means we need to do some updating on our house, pack, find another house… You get the idea. So Norman will be spending most of his time working on these goals. I think that will work out just fine because after the release of “Simple Choices” on June 1st, it will be another year before my next book is released.

Those of you who read my books might say, “Wait a minute! What about the third “Curl Up and Dye” mystery! Well, unfortunately, the publication of that book has been canceled. My publisher had to make a hard decision, and “Wedding Jitters” was one of several mystery books to bite the dust. But plans are in the works to get it out anyway. Maybe in ebook form. I’ll announce more about it when I have more information.

But with bad news comes good news! (Isn’t God good?) Next June, my first book from Bethany House will be released. I can’t tell you the title yet because it hasn’t been decided, but it is along the lines of my Harmony books. With a little more suspense. I know you’ll like it. AND my current publisher has decided to release all three Harmony books as a 3-in-1 around the same time! I’m very excited to see the Harmony series released this way. Readers seem to love 3-in-1 books. My “Cozy in Kansas” did very well in that format.

I wanted to share something today about the choice Norman and I made for our health care, but I’m running out of time today. I’ll try to get into more detail next time, but as you know, since we’re working for ourselves, health care is an issue. We picked a program called “Medi-Share,” and so far, we’re happy we did. Medi-Share combines payments from its members into a fund that pays for health-care needs. We have a pretty high deductible, and that helps to keep our costs low. The other cool thing is that we’ve been assigned a “health coach” who calls us every week and gives us great advice about nutrition, etc. When we return from our son’s wedding in Missouri, we intend to go on a six-week diet formulated by Dr. Joel Furhman from his book, “Eat to Live.” (I told a couple of people his book was titled “Live to Eat.” They were more than ready to climb on board… LOL!) Basically, his plan adds more vegetables, fruits, beans and nuts, while cutting down on fats and meats and eliminating processed foods. We’ve already made some changes and feel really good about them. As I said, I’ll go into more details later. Those of you who are looking for health care coverage should find it interesting. And by the way, Medi-Share DOES NOT fund abortions. That was a big selling point for me.

A Truly "Royal" Wedding!

Norman and I have been really busy. The big news is “the wedding!” No, it’s not William and Kate. It’s Danny and Shaen! My wonderful son and his beautiful fiancée will tie the knot on the 21st. Maybe it won’t have all the pomp and circumstance associated with the other “royal” wedding, but it will certainly be more important to these proud parents.

Danny waited a long time to find the “special” woman God had for him. And boy, is she special. This is one of those “Ishmael / Isaac” situations. Danny could have found an “Ishmael” bride just so he could get married. But he chose to wait for the woman God had for him. It took a move to another state to find her, but his feet barely hit Missouri soil, and there she was! Shaen is not only everything he wanted in a wife and lifelong companion, she is also every parent’s dream for their child. And she comes with a truly exceptional family as well. A double blessing. (S)

When they were dating, before they became engaged, I was in church one morning. During praise and worship, my mind started to wander (I thought). In my mind’s eye, I “saw” Shaen dressed in a wedding dress. She was so beautiful it brought tears to my eyes. Then I envisioned what I’d say to her and Danny before they married. It was so real and vivid, that I realized later it wasn’t my imagination. It was God confirming that this would be Danny’s wife. Not long after that, they fell in love and got engaged. Isn’t God good?

In my newest book, “Simple Choices,” there’s a scene that takes place at a wedding rehearsal dinner. The words I saw myself saying to Danny and Shaen are written into that scene. In celebration of this upcoming event, I’m giving away three copies of “Simple Choices” when it comes out. Since it hasn’t been released yet, the copies won’t be mailed out until after the 1st of June. So, if you’d like to win a copy, here’s what I’d like you to do.

WHAT TO DO WHEN OTHER THINGS POP UP!

Well, it’s been several months since Norman and I started working together. So, how’s it going? Very, very well. (Who woulda thunk it? LOL!) However, we’ve learned that being flexible is everything. We’re facing several things that might not seem as if they apply directly to the book business. But yet they do, and Norman has been the one bearing the burden of these particular tasks. I think the key to making this work is to realize that the majority of our income, at least for now, comes directly through my writing. Norman has intelligently come to the conclusion that his job primarily consists of keeping me on the computer! Next year, we intend to move into more book sales of our own as well as setting up more speaking engagements. His job will be to oversee these areas, thus bringing in additional income. But what are some of the other things he’s dealing with now?

Since we lost our health insurance through his job, we found it necessary to find something else. Because of our age and previous physical conditions, it hasn’t been easy. But we’re narrowing it down. Or should I say Norman is narrowing it down? We’re looking at a couple of choices. Medi-Share is a company that actually works by Christians sharing each other’s health burdens. I like that idea. I also like knowing that they are allowed to work outside of government control – and that none of my money funds abortions. There are some drawbacks, but so far, we like what they offer. We’re also looking at a rather new Blue Cross program. We’ll keep you updated on our final decision. But without Norman doing the research work in this area, I would have lost a lot of writing time.

He is also working to clear up our credit reports. As people who haven’t needed to think about credit for quite some time, we hadn’t checked out our reports for many years. We're discovering that if you don’t stay on top of this area, some funky stuff can land on your reports. Old stuff that should be taken off and new stuff that isn’t even on there. One report had Norman working a job he hasn’t been at for many, many years! And why are we checking our reports? (See the next paragraph!)

We are planning a move! Our son is getting married to a wonderful girl, and we want to live closer to them. They live in Missouri, so we will be looking for a new house later this year. The bulk of preparing for this move once again falls on Norman. Although I will be doing some packing and will be responsible for cleaning out certain rooms, most of the preparation will be on Norman’s capable shoulders. Again, I need to keep writing so that we actually have the money to move.

My point is that when a husband and wife work together, and if one person is the “money channel,” the other partner must do many things that don’t look as if they are directly tied to the business. However, they really are. The way to navigate through this area is by keeping your priorities clear. In our case it’s this: If I get distracted, it could slow our income. Norman is smart enough, and secure enough, to keep that from happening.

Writing for "The One"

"Doing it for the One"

I once had a friend who ran a mission for homeless men. So many of his clients seemed doomed to failure, and there didn’t appear to be many success stories that resulted from his endeavors. One day, during a conversation, I asked him, “Out of one hundred men, how many have you actually helped? How many changed their lives?”
He thought seriously for a moment. Then he answered, “Maybe one.”

I was flabbergasted. “How do you do this without giving up?”

He smiled and said, “I do it for the one.”

Writing is a gift. For Christian writers, it becomes something more. It is a ministry. But how can we reach out through our books and touch someone for Him? If we try to stuff our stories with too many spiritual ideas, we can actually dilute the message we want to send.

So, not long ago, after remembering my friend’s inspirational statement, I made a change. Now, I “do it for the one.” In other words, before I start a novel, I ask God to show me the person he wants to reach. Is it someone who didn’t have a father growing up and has a hard time trusting Father God? Or is it someone being abused, who needs to know there is a way out? Who is the person God wants to touch through this book? Doing this helps me to keep my focus and makes my message clearer.
For me, “doing it for the one,” is the way I can use my writing to really “do it for the One.”

GOD GIVE ME PATIENCE

I’d like to say that Norman and I hit the ground running in this new venture. But…that wouldn’t be true. I just spent most of the day getting entries ready for a couple of contests and preparing books to mail. This is something he’s supposed to take care of.

So why am I doing it?

Norman is a detailed planner, and I am a founding member in the “jump in and get it done” club. That means that while he’s “planning” a way to enter contests and send out books, I’m doing it. This could cause some stress between a husband and wife working together. But thankfully, I understand that even though I might feel a little frustrated when I’m doing work I don’t want to do, Norman is developing ways to make the process work smoothly. His way? Entries on a data base telling him all the things he needs to know to handle the entries and mailings correctly. You see, just because I understand the contest rules and the reason I’m mailing out books, it doesn’t mean he does. Have you ever worked with someone who didn’t take the time to explain what they wanted you to do? Remember that “deer-in-the-headlights” feeling you had? You can cause your mate to feel the same way if you don’t practice patience.

Norman will get everything figured out, and it will be a much better procedure than my crazed, “stick it in the mail and hope it’s right” method. It will save those panicked situations where I’m ripping open Priority Mail boxes mumbling, “I’m just sure I signed that entry form!” or “Did I really forget to put the entry fee check in there?” Norman’s methodical check-off list will solve those problems.

So, today’s advice is to be patient. Your partner’s way of working may not be your way, but if you’ll give them some time and space, it should pay off for both of you in the end.

WORKING TOGETHER...

Okay, Norman and I are a few months into our joint venture. So, how are things going? To be honest, they’re going very well. When I told one person we were going into the writing business together, he told me Norman might be able to keep busy five to ten hours a week. Not sure what world that was in, but in our world, Norman’s working more hours than I am! So…what’s he doing?

• He’s handling book mailings and watches our inventory
• He takes care of setting up promotional events
• He’s tracking and entering contests
• He’s setting up databases to handle all our different kinds of emails and requests
• He’s taken over all the tax stuff. (YAY!) I did this for years and years. Believe me, I’m, MORE than ready to give up control in this area.
• He protects my time by answering phone calls, handling day to day situations like finding out why our trash company failed to pick up our trash, replacing our faulty water dispenser, and taking the car in multiple times to fix something that should have been fixed the first time!
• He’s done all the work needed to find us affordable health coverage. (No one provides it when you no longer work for a company)
• He fixes lunch for me every day and washes all the dishes. I still handle the laundry, and once a week we clean the whole house together. It only takes us a couple of hours at the most, and our house has never been cleaner! (My thanks to Deb Raney for this suggestion.)
• We go to the grocery store together once a month, but he picks up everything we need in between. This is such a huge help! (Now, if would just stop buying whole canned tomatoes instead of diced and French style green beans instead of whole green beans. Sigh.)
• One of the most important things he does is to keep an eye on me. I recently spent three days working nonstop on a deadline I was determined to meet. I worked morning, afternoon and night. After it was turned in, he insisted I take a day off. That’s hard for me to do, but it was such a wonderful day! And today we’re actually going to a movie! YAY! This part of our working relationship is so important because I can easily overdo it. Having Norman to watch out for my emotional well-being is priceless.
• Here’s something else really neat thing he does: He turns on the heater in my office every morning so I won’t be cold, and there is always hot coffee made for me when I get up! And when I need something to drink during the day, all I have to do is ask.
• In a nutshell, he does everything he can to give me more writing time.

So, as you can see, Norman is a senior partner in this endeavor. The more he removes other duties and concerns from me, the more I can write and the faster I can turn out books. Since this directly affects our finances, you can see how important Norman’s role is!

BOOK SIGNINGS...SIGH.

Let’s talk about book signings. I can still remember the days when I toted my self-published book to the local Borders and tried to convince them they should carry it in their stores. Actually, I didn’t have a lot of trouble because I was writing book reviews for our local paper and was sending business their way. But some of my friends didn’t fare quite as well. And even though the bookstores would usually accept my books, albeit grudgingly, there was still the stigma of not being “good enough” to make it out of the “local interest” area and onto the main shelves. Back then, we were convinced the way to “make it” was to get Barnes and Noble to allow us to have a book signing amid their hallowed halls. Heck, we would have been happy if Bubba’s Used Bookstore had set aside an hour for us while Bubba took his daily nap. Book signings are directly related to your success as an author, right?

Okay, now let’s leave the Twilight Zone world of newbie authors and enter reality. I’m Nancy Mehl, and I’ll be your host.

My first real book signing was at Waldenbooks. I had a book published by a small press, and I also had a publicist. And…the folks at Waldenbooks actually wanted me! (You like me, you really like me!) I showed up, nervous as a calf at a new gate (what does that even mean?) but ready to greet my adoring fans. Waldenbooks had a table set up at the entrance to the store, facing the interior of the mall, with my beautiful books on display. When I sat down, expecting the line of eager readers to snake down the mall and block entrances to other nearby stores, I was…well, let’s just say…surprised. No one was there. Even worse, as people walked past me, I began to wonder if I was trapped in one of those dreams where you begin to realize you’re invisible and no one can see you. (Thankfully it wasn’t the one where you discover you forgot to dress!) Now I’m not saying no one stopped. I directed several people to various places in the mall, including the bathrooms. I would say that particular request was the most frequent. Those who actually stopped to see what I was doing and picked up my book, looked at me like I was trying to sell them tickets to a rattlesnake rodeo. After a while I felt guilty about the whole thing. Not sure why, but I did. Thankfully, several friends and family stopped by, had pity on me, and bought a copy of my book. After my very painful two hours had passed and I’d only sold twelve books, I expected the folk at Waldenbooks to tell me to never darken their door again. But they seemed happy!

“Good signing,” the gal said when I dragged myself inside the store, ready to admit defeat. I’m sure my jaw dropped, but I quickly regained my composure and tried to look triumphant. Her reaction should have given me a clue to the reality of book signings. But no such luck. When I got home, I talked the experience over with my husband. Surely this was an anomaly. Future book signings would be better. And they have been. Thanks once again to friends and family. Sigh. Yes, now that I’m with a large publisher, book signings are much better. I had a great experience celebrating the release of a new series. The store went out of its way to support me. Sent out postcards, put my name on the store marquee, had flyers from my publisher on the doors. In fact, they even made a cake with my book cover on it and served food! What more could anyone ask? And we sold lots and lots of books! Mostly to my friends and family – and acquaintances. You see, I’ve learned how to send invitations to everyone I’ve ever met or passed on the street. Sigh.

But my last signing…and let me emphasize LAST signing…was awful. The store did…well, nothing. No name on the marquee, no postcards, they didn’t even bother to put my posters on the door. I may have sold ten books. Thanks to friends and family...again. The failure of this signing was especially strange since this was the same store that went all out for my previous series launch.

This weekend, I went to a book signing for an author who is very well known. Much more so than me. Same store where my LAST book signing was held. They managed to find her posters and put them on the doors – but little else was done. In fact, they hadn’t even gotten the books in for the signing. There she stood, one of Christian fiction’s top authors, without the minimal support the store should have provided.

And in conclusion…no more signings unless the store specifically asks me or it’s a multi-author event. This advice comes from other authors who have already found out what I’ve just discovered. It ain’t worth it. Even if they're "successful," you will barely make enough money to take the family to McDonalds. In fact, if you want to sell books yourself, sell them outright to your friends and family. They'll probably appreciate you saving them a trip to the bookstore.

My publisher can get my books out better than I can. So, I’ll stick to the writing and let them do the book selling.

Oh, one interesting note: The same day of that LAST lousy signing, I first visited another bookstore in a nearby small town. This store put out some real effort and it was a nice signing. Yes, some friends came, but there were also other people who showed up! People I didn’t even know! Imagine that…

So, for those of you just starting out, take my advice. Unless your ego needs a beating, put your energy into writing a great book and don’t worry about book signings.

Your friends and family will probably salute you.

YOU DON'T KNOW EVERYTHING...

Christmas has come and gone, and a new year has begun. So…as Norman and I plan for 2010, what are some of our goals?

On a personal level, we plan to lose weight, pay off our last credit card, fix up our house, and get our credit reports in order in case we decide to buy another house. All of these things make sense to me, and we will do them together.

But as for our business, things are different. Norman is busy setting up data bases that will track emails, give us a mailing list for book signings and author events, and manage our monthly newsletter list. Besides this, he’s setting us up as an actual business. He’ll be tracking individual books sales, paying sales tax, and finding out the best way to structure our endeavors for the greatest tax advantages.

For the most part, we will not do these things together.

Why?

In any business, especially between a husband and wife, two big concepts are important to understand. Number one, each person must have their own specifically defined duties. And number two, each person must work with their own specific strengths and talents. Setting up data bases isn’t my strength. Trust me. And Norman would quickly admit that my publisher doesn’t want him to write my next book.

So, if you’re thinking about starting your own business, first write down the duties each person will be responsible for. And if someone else is in charge of something…shut up. It’s not wrong to offer your opinion, as long as it’s not too often, but it is wrong to think you know everything about everything. Not only will it confuse your partnership, but it can build a sense of distrust. Your business partner (especially your mate) needs to know you trust the gifts God has placed inside them. Too much “help” can actually cause them to become tentative and may even strip their confidence. This won’t strengthen your business. In fact, it could sink it. Give your partner the freedom to allow God to become their instructor. If you do, you’ll both reap great rewards.

Repeat this after me: “I really don’t know everything.”

Happy New Year!

I love beginning a new year. Even though there’s nothing magical about it, a brand new year can present us with a reminder that things in our lives are subject to change. We can begin again. 2010 is gone, and 2011 holds great possibilities! I love it that people use a new year as a way to take stock of their lives and decide to make changes. Lots of folks will lose weight, quit smoking, spend more time in God’s Word, and show more appreciation to the people they love. These are all good things. The challenge can be to hang in there and make the changes permanent. In our human frailty, true change is hard. But in Christ, it’s easy – if we know how to rest in the promises of God. Many times, this comes through simple surrender. “I know I can’t change this in my own strength, Father. But through You, I can do all things.” I encourage you to turn the changes you want to see over to God, not putting your hope in the flesh – but in the Spirit.

2010 was an incredible year in my life. So many desires of my heart came to pass. I’m looking forward to 2011, believing even more blessing will come. Christians can be funny, sometimes. And I don’t mean “humorous.” Many seem to believe more in trials than in triumph. I’ve had trials, but I still believe in triumph. “Oh, but Jesus said that in this world we will have trouble!” they cry when you tell them you’re believing for blessings. They don’t finish the scripture. “But take heart! I have overcome the world!” This isn’t a message of defeat. It’s a message of victory!

As I've mentioned before, in 2010, my husband and I were experiencing a long term lack of employment. Norman was laid off from a very good job at the end of 2008. But you know what? God took care of us. Our bills were paid, and He provided for us. Norman tried and tried to get a job, but he was turned down time after time. Finally, we began to wonder if God had a different plan. And He did. At exactly the right time, the answer came. You see, God heard our prayer for help when we first prayed. And He answered. We simply had to wait until all the pieces were in place before we saw the answer. Many times, we give up during our “waiting” time. I believe this is why God admonishes us so much to be patient. To “wait” on Him. It’s because the answer is coming, we just can’t see it yet.

It may be this way for you with your New Year’s resolutions. Maybe you’ve tried and failed time after time. But God has heard your prayer. And the answer is coming! Praise Him for it while you’re waiting. And rest in knowing He loves you, and that He will come through with your breakthrough at the right time.

So…HAPPY NEW YEAR! 2010 is gone, and 2011 is here! Get your expectations up. God is a wonderful Father who has great things in store for us! Hallelujah!

PROMOTION - WHAT WORKS AND WHAT DOESN'T?

I'll bet you thought I planned to actually answer this question about promotion. Nope. Problem is, I don't know the answer. Many publishers ask what an author's plan is to promote their book should they offer them a contract. What is their "platform?" The only platform I ever had were on my shoes in the seventies. And they hurt. A lot.

As far a promotional ideas, authors are bombarded with choices. Of course, you need a Web site. And a blog. (That's what this is!) And then there's Facebook and Twitter. I don't consider myself stupid, but I just can't figure out Twitter. I post some inane comment and then what? It disappears into cyber space? I don't get it. Now, I happen to like Facebook. I've connected with friends I thought were long gone. And I've made some friends I'd like to see go. (Quit spamming me! And quit asking me to "like" stuff! I don't "like" that!) But all in all, I'm enjoying it.

So what's an author to do?

I've done almost everything there is to do promotion-wise. I wrote reviews for the largest newspaper in Kansas thinking that would promote my books. Nope. I've joined all kinds of groups hoping everyone on the list would run out and buy everything I've ever written. Nope again. I've discovered one thing every author will learn quickly. If you're hoping a big group of authors will buy your books, forget it. We're all too busy writing them to actually read them. But belonging to a group of authors provides something else. Encouragement, advice and networking. And sometimes friendships. But promotion? Once in a while. Two lovely ladies, Cindy Woodsmall and Wanda Brunstetter highlighted me in their newsletters. I didn't ask for it, they just did it. And other authors have included me on their blogs. I used to run a review/interview blog with the lovely Cindy Hickey, but I got too busy and had to stop. Don't know if any of the authors we interviewed sold books, but I've found that the results of those experiences are minimal.

Other ways I've tried to promote my books? Contests. I won the American Christian Fiction Writers' Book of the Year Award for Mystery in 2009. (Now called The Carol Award.) That book didn't sell more than any of my other books.

What about book signings? Please. They're great for meeting readers - if they show up. Usually, the only people who come are your put-upon family and friends who tramp out in rain, snow or whatever, just because they love you. But we still do book signings just in case an unknown reader wants to meet their favorite author. It could happen. Sigh.

And I realize Karen Kingsbury doesn't have this problem. But I'm not her. Yet. (S)

I may have sold a few books through Facebook. None through Twitter. And reviews? They may actually help - when it's Publisher's Weekly or Romantic Times. I've done well with Romantic Times. PW? Well, moving right along...

I will continue to post on Facebook, and I'll keep up this blog. I think. As long as someone comments once in a while. (Hint, hint.) But to be honest about it, the only thing I've ever found that really helps book sales (unless you become a serial killer or act inappropriately with the President of the United States - neither one I'm willing to do) is a great publisher who works hard to promote your books. I've had that in the past and hope to have the same in the future. These guys know what they're doing. They have relationships with the stores, and they can promote in ways an author will never be able to do.

So, I'll continue to do my part, but I don't want to spend writing time promoting. I'm of the opinion that my job is to write good books. My publisher's job is to promote. If my books aren't good, no promotion in the world will help. Now one note: any promotion my publisher asks me to do, I will gladly do. Cooperation is key. But let them do the lion's share of selling my books. They're the experts.

Now I realize this concept doesn't work with every publisher. I have great compassion for authors who self-publish or work with small publishers. I have no advice for you. I've been there. It's tough. Unless you write "The Shack" or fall back on the serial killer / presidential hanky-panky thing, you have a long, hard road to hoe. I don't envy you. I always advise writers to keep working toward that big publisher that can move your career forward.

And that's all I have to say about that.

Just wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and hoping you will remember the "Reason for the Season." Do we concentrate too much on turkey and pumpkin pies? Shouldn't we honor the One whose love makes us really thankful?

I am so thankful to Him for my salvation. If that was all He ever did for us, it would be (and is) awesome. That the God of the universe, the Alpha and Omega, loved sinful man enough to suffer and die for him, is almost beyond comprehension. But His continued love and incredible blessings make me almost speechless. God, our Father, loves us more than our own human fathers possibly could. I pray you will come to Him as a little child - believing that He is good. All the time.

Remember Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Father God, help us to come to You every day as a little child, trusting and believing in Your goodness. Many times we complicate the simple message of love with human ideas and theological gibberish. Keep our faith childish and our trust in You deep. In Jesus wonderful name - Amen.

SAYING "NO" - PART DEUX

Well, my latest novel has been sent to the publisher and now work begins on the next one. I have two months to write it – during the holidays! So, how do I handle the pressure? Simple. I don’t. I believe I’m fulfilling the call on my life and that God will give me whatever I need to complete it. Am I perfect in this area? No, wish I was. But at least I know what to aim for. The Bible tells us over and over not to worry or fret. And that without faith it’s impossible to please God. So what are my options? Hmmmm. There are none. So, I purpose in my heart to enjoy my writing, and I believe everything will turn out all right. Does this mean I can just sit back and watch TV all day? No, it means I have to do my part. To strive for excellence. But it’s also my job to make sure I’m resting in His promise to complete that which concerns me. I see too many authors straining under incredible stress, even unhappy with their writing life. I don’t intend to be one of them. I try to thank God every day for giving me the best job in the world, and if I start to feel stressed, I work to change my attitude. However, there is another aspect to being able to walk out your calling in peace and contentment. It has to do with your ability to say “no.” We’ve looked at the guilt that can come at us when we say "no" to activities at church. Now, let’s look at a tough subject: our friends.

Although a lot of people think being an author is fun and glamorous, it's not. It's hard work and requires a great deal of discipline. Readers may think we’re fighting off friends and fans with a stick. But it’s not true. To meet my writing goals, I have very little time for outside social functions. For the most part, my closest friends are the people I work with through Wichita Homebound Outreach, a volunteer organization I’m part of. We do monthly events for low-income seniors who live in congregate housing. And everyone in the group knows there are times I won’t be able to show up to an event or run a meeting. Asking someone else to help lead this group has helped. But even with this assistance, sometimes I still have to say “no.” Thank God for friends who understand. Now, what about other friends who want to have lunch, go out to a social event, or even call me on the phone? This is where it can get touchy.

It’s hard to say “no” to friends, and it’s even harder to develop close relationships when you don’t have much time to spend with people. Again, I’m blessed in this area because my friends understand. One long time friend, Leslie, sees me once every few months. Yet every time we get together, it’s like we just saw each other the day before. This is a divine connection. A God inspired friendship. I have a few of those. Do I take them for granted? Yes. This is one area of my life I’m working on. What’s the answer? I have some friends I used to work with, and we get together for lunch once a month. This gives me time to catch up. Works great for us. I’m working on a plan to have lunch out a least once a month with other friends on an individual basis. At least it will keep me in touch. Other ways to keep the fires of friendship burning? Emails, Facebook, and even an occasional greeting card can help. As I type this I realize I can come up higher in this area as well.

Let's talk phone calls. DNC. Do not call a busy author. I realize this isn’t true of everyone, but I share this feeling with many, many other authors. Why? Because I could be writing. Because if I’m not writing I might be trying to spend time with my husband. I'm on a tight schedule, and I can't possibly schedule a sudden phone call. Email me, but don’t call. Or email me with a request to call. For the most part, if you call, you will get voice mail. I’ll call you back when I can. I know this sounds harsh. Don’t get offended. Please.

SAYING "NO." OR HOW TO LOSE FRIENDS AND INFLUENCE PEOPLE TO HATE YOU

Okay, so maybe "hate" is too strong. But busy writers do have to say "no" frequently. Writing is a job unlike many others. Butchers, bakers, and candlestick makers can usually stop between projects and do other things. But writers work in an environment that demands continuity. In other words, it's not always possible to stop in the middle of a plotline and take a break. Unless you make really good notes, interrupting your direction can cause you to lose your flow. And then there's that dreaded deadline thing. A deadline is a deadline. It's not a suggestion. Note the word "dead" being the first part of the word. Publishers view deadlines seriously, and serious writers respect publishers. Without them, your next book may only be read by you, your closest family members, and the lady with all the cats who lives two doors down. I've only asked for a deadline extension three times. Once when the size of a novel was extended 3,000 words by my editor, another time when the manuscript was actually due on a Saturday and I asked if I could turn it in on Monday when the publisher was actually open. And recently when I discovered that the time between the book I'm finishing now and the next book for the same publisher was only two weeks. I mean, I'm fast, but give me a break. I had a vision of Norman running up and down the stairs, bringing me bread and water, and slapping me awake while yelling, "The deadline's coming, the deadline's coming!!!" Not a very happy scenario. LOL! (And my publisher DID extend that deadline. Now I have two months to write a book. Sigh.) So...obviously when you're working under deadlines and need long periods of uninterrupted time, there are some things you just can't do. Times when you will have to say "no." Let's look at one area that causes a lot of consternation to authors and church leaders alike:

1. "No, I can't help clean the church, lead the Bible study, do street ministry, or join the praise and worship team."

Now many authors do these things and write. It isn't impossible. I have a ministry to seniors which I'll talk about in an upcoming post. But for someone who used to be very active in church, my life is much different now. I used to lead praise and worship, I was a youth minister, and yes, I even cleaned the church. I loved doing all these things. But no one can do it all. And let me make one thing very clear. MY WRITING IS MY MINISTRY! For those of you who think authors are selfish, self-involved people who just don't care about anyone else...you're wrong. At least in my case. I'm sure most Christian authors will agree with me that writing is their number one ministry - next to their families. You see, my books will get into the hands of a lot of people. Probably (and hopefully!) more people than are in my church. It's my calling to offer my readers a lifeline to Jesus. I put every book into God's hands and ask him to bring a word in due season to every single person who opens the pages of my books. So when I say "no" to a church project, it isn't because I don't care. It's because I'm trying to fulfill the ministry God has called me to. Most of the time, I will buy something the church needs or write a check to fulfill a need. So, I do get involved, but I have to do it in a way that protects my writing time. And there may be occasions when God says, "I want you to say 'yes' this time." When that happens, I will be obedient because it's all about Him, isn't it?

I do have another ministry, btw. Wichita Homebound Outreach is a ministry I helped to start. We host monthly dinners and events for low-income seniors in public housing. It's rewarding, and I love working with some of the best people in the world. My fellow WHOers know that there are times I won't be available. A couple of years ago, I asked for someone else to become co-president of WHO so some of the administrative duties would be lightened. My friend, Debbie, stepped up and has been a godsend. I'm very committed to this group, but for the most part, I'm not afraid to say "No!" when I have to. *One interesting note: We're getting ready for our busiest time of the year. We actually have five different events in November and December. And I have to write a book by January 15th. I may have to pull out my "NO!" card like the woman in the picture I posted for this blog. It won't be comfortable, but if I have to, I have to. (Or I could just ask Norman to fill in for me. Honey??????)

Thought I'd tackle the church/ministry part first because it's one of the most sensitive subjects for authors.

But...next time I'll take on the personal relationships. Oh, my.

STAYING ON TRACK

Norman and I are very busy setting up the bones of our business. He’s putting together a database that will hold names and addresses of people who might want to be notified of upcoming book signings or other author events. We’ve updated our phones and ordered a new computer. (Mine bit the dust.) Also, Norman is applying for a sales tax number so we can begin selling signed books. We’re discovering that there’s a lot of work to selling books. How much to charge so we clear a profit? How do readers pay? What about tax and postage? Do we set up sales info on our Web site or on our blog? Whew. This stuff isn’t easy. And this is only the beginning. Our “To Do” lists are long and will take some time to work through. With everything that’s going on in the background, how do we stay on track with the primary job of turning out good books people will want to read? Here are some suggestions to help a busy author:

1. Have a private, quiet place to write. Trying to create an excellent novel in the middle of all the busyness around you can make your job almost impossible. And your partner MUST know that when you say “Do not interrupt me unless the house is burning down,” you mean it. My husband loves me, and sometimes this means he has a hard time not sharing whatever pops into his head during the day. Slowly but surely, he’s learning that writing is a process and that sometimes breaking my concentration can mean I have to go back through many pages to pick up the current plotline I’m working on.

2. Know when to say, “When!” That happened to me this weekend. Too much to do. Too much stress. I pulled the plug. Yes, I wanted to turn my current novel in today, but I just couldn’t do it. The true deadline is the 15th, so I’m taking a deep breath and giving myself the full amount of time if I need it. Unfortunately, that only gives me two months to write my next book, but I’ll have to deal with that later. I need to focus on today. Matthew 6: 34 says: "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Of course, we know that God doesn’t want us to worry about anything, but this verse reminds us that we only need to think about what’s happening now. Things change. In the past, I used to fret over certain disasters I saw lurking on the horizon. I mean, I just knew these awful things were going to happen. They’d been set in motion, and in my mind, the dreaded results were inevitable. Then one day, God spoke to me and asked this question: “Has it (meaning this bad result I expected) happened yet?” I thought about it and had to answer “No, Lord. It hasn’t happened yet.” Then He asked another question. “Is everything okay today?” Hmmm. I considered this. My response was: “Yes, Lord. Everything is fine today.” It didn’t take any further comment from Him for me to get His point. TODAY my needs are met and there is nothing to be concerned about. So, I quit (for the most part) worrying about tomorrow. The result was more peace in my life and the surprising discovery that most of those impending catastrophes never manifested. First of all, God has proven to be much better at solving problems than I am. However, we’ve got to release them first, and if we’re worrying about them, obviously we haven’t given them completely to Him. Big mistake.

3. When I crumbled under the pressure of my self-made deadline, Norman sat me down and told me to give him a list of things he could do to help keep the pressure off of me. I’m working on that, although asking him to finish this book probably won’t happen. LOL! But one thing I did ask was for him to keep an eye on my work schedule. If he sees me writing all day and through the weekend, he needs to step in and offer some words of wisdom like: “Get dressed. I’m taking you to a movie” or “We’re going out for a nice leisurely dinner.” It can be anything that will force the harried writer to look at something besides a computer screen for a while. If you have a workaholic personality like mine, it’s helpful if your mate/business partner recognizes it and steps in to protect you against yourself.

I’ll save some other suggestions for my next blog, but just be advised that working with your mate is kind of like going to Disney World by traveling through a mine field. If you’re careful, you’ll be dancing with Mickey. But if you’re not, Goofy may be picking up the pieces and burying your dreams in Neverland. Not a good place to end up. (S)

Having Your Own Business and Working With Your Spouse

Hi everyone! My name is Norman, and I’m Nancy’s husband.

I’m writing my very first blog so I hope it makes sense.

Approximately 15 to 20 years ago, my wife and I owned a business. It was a janitorial service company. At our peak we had about 25 – 30 separate accounts and 20 employees. We had it for nine years. We experienced good and bad times. The good times occurred when everything was going smoothly, all bills getting paid, etc. Some of the bad times happened when employees didn’t show up to work or when one was high on drugs and decided to attack me. Of course, there were many other interesting situations, but the point is that there are usually positive and negative things that happen when have your own business regardless of how hard you work.

One of the main goals in running a company should be to have as many good things happen as possible and experience a very small amount of trouble. A company may run perfectly for a while and then without warning, tough times and troubles come. How you prepare and how you respond is extremely important.

You should try to have the correct knowledge, finances, time, experience and organizational skills to run whatever business you decide to start. If you lack in any of these areas, some major problems will probably pop up.

If you’re working with your spouse, you need to be in complete agreement whenever possible. If you aren’t in agreement, your business has little chance of succeeding. Nancy and I have an understanding that if we disagree about something, I have the responsibility to decide what to do since I handle most of the administrative decisions. Nancy’s main responsibility is to write novels. We have it arranged like this in order to simplify her work while I take care of everything else. This should help her writing time increase which in turn should increase the amount and quality of what she does.

With this blog I’m not intending to cover everything, just a few important things when it comes to running your own business and working with your spouse. Believe me, it helps if you truly love,like and enjoy spending time with your other half. I’m very fortunate in this area.

Merging Marriage and Making Money

Okay, the title of this blog isn't perfect. There's more to working together than just "making money," but I wanted words that started with "M." :-) I could have called it "Merging Marriage and Moil," but would you have known what I meant? LOL!

So, last time I left you with the story of how Norman and I decided we would combine forces to do this "writing thing." Today I want to talk about how to work with your mate in a business sense. The most important thing that you MUST do before launching into a venture like this is to make certain you're hearing from God. I know that I know that I know God has called me to write. How do I know? Easy. I asked Him. In fact, I asked Him to confirm this calling in a big way - something spectacular. And He did. Unfortunately, there are some authors out there, struggling to make a go of it, who have never asked God His will for their lives. They just launched out into doing what THEY wanted to do. Unless you want to birth an Ishmael, DON'T DO THIS!!! It will only lead to frustration and discouragement. I have to share that beyond asking God His will for my life, I also gave my writing completely to Him. In other words, I told Him I only wanted to write what He wanted me to write. I don't have time right now, but in another blog, I'll tell you what happened when I did that - and meant it with my whole heart. Let's just say that doors that had been closed for years blew open within a two week period. And He's continued to open them in supernatural ways ever since. In fact, the results are mind-blowing. But be assured of one thing - this isn't a ploy to GET God to do what YOU want. It has to be real and sincere - without fear or reservation. Easy to say. Harder to do sometimes. You've got to trust God completely. And to trust God completely, you have to know who He really is. Sadly, many Christians don't really KNOW Him.

Now let's move on to Norman. How do I know he's supposed to become a part of this "business?" Every other door was closed to us. God leads us in several ways. First of all by the Holy Spirit. In fact, let's just get down to it. EVERYTHING GOD TELLS YOU TO DO WILL BE THROUGH THE HOLY SPIRIT. Even His word has been given to us and becomes life to us through The Spirit. So even if God sends you a sign, the Holy Spirit will confirm it if it's God. If He doesn't...run. Run fast and run hard. Works and signs are by products of the Holy Spirit's leading, but they can't be relied on as your primary reason for doing ANYTHING. The devil loves to mess with your circumstances. If you allow him to, he'll lead you down the wrong path. Watch for, wait for, and refuse to move until you hear from the Holy Spirit. He's the Person of the Godhead who is working in the world today, and He is the one who will lead you, comfort you, and show you things to come. When Norman and I realized that his attempt to find a job wasn't working, we began to wonder if God Himself was closing all those doors. As soon as we started talking about joining together, things began to move. And the Holy Spirit gave us a peace that we were on the right track. An incredible offer from a publisher gave us the capital we needed to begin this journey. So....we're off.

Now...how to do this? I knew one thing. Norman could NOT work FOR me. Since he is the head of our house, I realized we had to keep him in his God-given place. So, how to implement our roles? We decided that Norman would become the business manager and I would stay the "product." In other words, he has his area of authority over the business aspects of our collaboration. And I write. One author I know said that her "husband works for her." I think that's a mistake. Once in the past, Norman and I tried to work together in the insurance business. It was a disaster. Why? Because with my strong personality I tried to tell him what to do and berated him for what I thought were his "weaknesses." His natural desire to lead was quashed beneath my attitude. Lesson learned. Not happening this time.

Norman is working hard to learn about all the promotion, tax stuff and business aspects of writing. Writers know how much more there is to writing than just...writing! It's a job. In fact, it can be overwhelming. It will take some time for Norman to get a grasp on all of it. But my confindence is first in the Lord - and secondly in Norman. He's an extremely intelligent man who has all kinds of gifts and strength. I believe this collaboration will be a great success.

Now if he would just quit talking to me while I'm writing... Sigh. (G)

New Directions!

I've been writing for a little over 15 years. When I started out, I had no idea what I was doing. Slowly but surely I began to learn that writing is a craft. It takes much more than just throwing words on paper. I still have a lot to learn, but God has blessed me even though I'm not as knowledgeable as many of my writing peers.

In November of 2008, my hard-working, wonderful husband was laid off when the company he worked for decided to send his department to Houston. He was offered a job there, but because of my job and other situations, we decided not to accept the offer. Believe me, in the following year and a half we second-guessed that decision more than once.

The next blow was losing a job I loved and had held for nine years. Where was God in all this? As a person who believes that God has a plan for our lives and having given my life and future to Him, my husband and I had to walk in faith more than ever before. Through it all, our bills stayed paid, and our needs were met. Except for our incredible son, no one except God stepped in to help us. Thankfully, we never had to accept our son's offer. God was our only provider.

Norman applied for job after job - jobs he was qualified for and jobs he was over-qualified for. But time after time, the door swung shut. We realized that we only had two choices. Either we could give up - or we could continue to praise God, tithe, give and walk in love. We chose the latter.

And then suddenly...

God opened a door that gave us a chance to look in a new direction. Was it time for me to jump into this writing thing full time? What about Norman? Was it possible for him to take over the business and promotional duties that come with being an author? After talking it out, we realized we really wanted to work together. In fact, it was the desire of our hearts. But was this choice ours or God's? After much prayer and seeking God's voice, we made the decision to take a leap of faith. We're excited and trusting Him to perfect a work in us that we believe He began.

During the next few months, we'll both be sharing our experiences. We hope our story will resonate not only with authors who might be thinking about taking this "full-time" step, but also with those of you who may have lost jobs in this economy. We've all faced the same trials no matter what our jobs are - or were. I hope our journey will encourage you. We're all in this together, right?

A Holiday Called Holiday, by Terri Blackstock

It’s Christmas Eve 2009, and as I work in the kitchen, I’ve had the TV on. I can’t help being amused and a little irritated at the efforts by the media to keep from saying the word “Christmas.” A few days ago I heard a morning talk show host talking about “the spirit of the Holiday,” and I thought, what holiday? Columbus Day? Labor Day? I’m sometimes a little dense, but I need her to be more specific. I didn’t know a season of days could actually have a spirit.

Then today, as I’m watching HGTV, I see a man decorating a house for “The Holiday.” He puts up the tree, decorates the tables, and hangs things on the wall, very carefully avoiding the word Christmas. And he shows us how he painted big letters to hang on the wall, spelling out the word “H-o-l-i-d-a-y.” Really? Are we really celebrating a holiday called Holiday?

It makes me wonder what people who are allergic to the word Christmas say to each other on that day. Do they show up at their families’ homes with their arms loaded with Holiday gifts (wrapped in Holiday paper), and say, “Merry Holiday”? Do they stand around their Holiday tree and sing Holiday carols and eat a Holiday meal? Does no one ever say, “But what holiday?”

We’re not afraid to utter the name of any other holiday. We’re very brazen about saying Happy New Year, Happy Halloween, Happy Labor Day, Happy Columbus Day, Happy July 4th. But to say--gasp!--Merry Christmas is just the height of rudeness? Millions of people around the world are celebrating it with traditions that go back 2000 years, yet we Americans are not allowed to say the word?

You just have to laugh. Those poor people are working so hard to remove the obvious from their … ahem … holiday, that they miss the joy of celebrating Christmas. Yes, I said it. Christmas, Christmas, Christmas, Christmas, Christmas, Christmas, Christmas! I love Christmas, and I love the spirit of Christmas, and I love the joy of Christmas. And most of all I love that it all centers around the Christ child “who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.” (Philippians 2:6) I guess that’s what they’re really trying to avoid.

I hope you all celebrate Christmas boldly and passionately, and never be afraid to say the name of Christ. We’re not celebrating a holiday called Holiday.

Merry Christmas! And Happy Birthday, Jesus!

A NEW BEGINNING

SIMPLE SECRETS has been written and turned into my publisher. Of course, edits are coming! Some authors love edits. Some dread them. I'm kind of in the middle. I dread them when they come, but I recognize how important it is to have a good editor. I'm excited to have an editor I know will do her best to make SIMPLE SECRETS shine.

I've started work on SIMPLE DECEIT, the second book in this new series. I have a general idea where it's going, but I don't have it all figured out yet. Does this scare me? Not at all. I count on the Holy Spirit for ideas and direction. I find it exciting when He reveals a plot twist or shows me something special about one of my characters. I know SIMPLE DECEIT will have some surprises. Not only for my readers - but for me, too!

Along with a new book in the works, I am taking a new direction with this blog. Cindy Hickey and I have spent a couple of years working on a blog together. FINDING FAITH THROUGH FICTION has been a fun venture, but we're both so busy, we've decided to concentrate on developing our own blogs. I want to share my writing experience with you, and I intend to ask some of my author friends to drop by once in a while for an interview or blog. If you have any ideas for this blog, I would love to hear them!

I will also be starting a newsletter sometime in the next few months so I can keep readers updated on new book releases, etc. If you would like to receive my newsletter, would you write to me at: nancymehlbooks@hotmail.com? I will add your name to my list.

2009 ACFW BOOK OF THE YEAR NOMINATION!

I am so pleased and excited to announce that my novel, FOR WHOM THE WEDDING BELL TOLLS, is a finalist for the 2009 American Christian Fiction Writers's Mystery Book of the Year! The winner will be announced at the ACFW Conference in September. I'm hoping to be there. I'd love to win, but I'm up against some really great authors. I'm simply happy to be in their midst.

Here is a synopsis of FOR WHOM THE WEDDING BELL TOLLS:

For Ivy Towers, life appears to be finally coming together. Her bookstore is making money; she is living in her dream house; and she is preparing to marry the love of her life. Ivy and Deputy Sheriff Amos Parker are planning a Valentine’s Day Wedding in Winter Break, Kansas.

Everyone wants to be involved in some way, especially Delaphine Shackleford, wife of the only insurance agent for miles around. The Shacklefords were recently sent to Winter Break by Farm and Field Insurance Company in Dodge City so that Barney could stay in contact with their rural customers. Delaphine is very unhappy with life in a small town. She misses the “big city” where she was known as a bon vivant in Dodge City society. She finds life in Winter Break almost unbearable – that is until Ivy lets it slip that she is hard-pressed to find time to plan her wedding. Dela, as she asks Ivy to call her, offers her services as a wedding planner, claiming to have created memorable weddings for many of her high-class friends. Ivy accepts her help, thinking her problems are solved. However, she quickly discovers that they are just beginning. Dela takes over the wedding with ideas that don’t come close to anything Ivy had in mind. From a Valentine’s Day theme overflowing with goofy red hearts, to a semi-authentic Chinese wedding, each suggestion is worse than the one before. Finally, just when Ivy is at the end of her rope, Dela comes up with an idea that just might work. But before Ivy and Dela have a chance to carry out the preparations for Ivy’s upcoming nuptials, someone puts a halt to the proceedings – and to Dela. Ivy finds Dela dead, stabbed with one of the bronze, engraved chopsticks used at her own wedding dinner.

It doesn’t take long for Ivy to realize that the police count her among the suspects in Dela’s murder. Now, Ivy has to plan her own wedding and find Dela’s killer before she’s hauled off to jail for something she didn’t do. Amos tries to help, but he up to his ears with a series of robberies in the county.

A break-in at Ivy’s house worries Amos, who is afraid that Dela’s killer has also targeted Ivy. But officials called in to investigate the murder refuse to listen to advice from a “small town hick deputy.” Amos’s concern for Ivy’s safety drives him to contact her parents and ask them to come to Winter Break and stay with her. Problems mount, however, when Ivy’s mother, Marjorie, decides to help out the investigation. Unfortunately, her “help” may end up putting them exactly where the killer wants them to be.

Through the mystery and mayhem that surround Ivy Towers and Amos Parker, love blooms on the snowy plains of Kansas in this third book in the Winter Break series.

A NEW PROJECT...

I've received quite a few e-mails from readers asking what's coming next. So here's an update:

Unfortunately, my CURL UP AND DYE series has been put off for a while. It will be published - but won't come out until 2011. It will be released as a three-in-1 compilation - just like COZY IN KANSAS. If you liked COZY IN KANSAS, I think you'll like this series, too. It's been a lot of fun to write.

The reason CURL UP AND DYE has been delayed is so I can write a brand new series! Titled THE HARMONY SERIES, it will contain three books. These will be full length, individual titles. Right now, I'm writing the first novel - SIMPLE SECRETS.

SIMPLE SECRETS introduces Gracie Temple, a young graphic designer living and working in the big city. However, an unexpected phone call turns her world upside down. An uncle she's never met has died and left his estate to her. Now her father wants her to go to Harmony, Kansas, settle his estranged brother's estate, and rescue family heirlooms before they're lost. After some thought, Gracie takes two weeks off to travel to the Mennonite town of Harmony. Not long after she arrives, she discovers a long buried secret that threatens to destroy her family. In a desperate quest for the truth, Gracie finds that not all is as it appears in Harmony. Her search will uncover threads of secrecy winding through the small town. She will be helped by Sam Goodrich, a good-looking farmboy who isn't her type at all. Or is he?

DO DOGS GO TO HEAVEN?

I recently found the following poem online. At this time in my life, it holds great meaning to me. I am printing it with permission from its author, Dan Atcheson. His beautiful poem was written for his wonderful friend which happened to be a bulldog. I've removed the word "bully" from the poem and inserted "Eddie." I hope Dan won't mind.

Eddie was a wonderful Jack Russell terrier with a personality that shown through everything he did. He loved his toys and would sing "Happy Birthday" right along with the rest of the family. My son, Danny, was the last person who had the privilege of being serenaded by Eddie.

He always wanted to touch you. He slept on the bed - sometimes right next to you - and sometimes farther away. But he always had at least one paw reaching out to let you know know he was there - and to make sure you were also there for him.

He had a way of staring at you as if he could see into your soul. He slept at my feet while I wrote and followed me wherever I went. But a few weeks ago, he went somewhere ahead of me - not the way he usually does things. And I couldn't follow him. But I am counting on God to keep him safe until I get to where he is.

In December, my son bought me the strangest gift. A small ornament. At the time, I thought it was a little odd. Not the kind of thing he would normally buy. Too corny for his tastes. But he told me after Eddie was gone that God told him to buy it for me - five months before we had a clue that Eddie was sick.

It's an angel holding a small dog. God was reaching out to comfort me months before I would need it.

I don't know why we couldn't save Eddie. We did everything we could think of. We prayed, we confessed, we believed, and we took him to specialists. But for some reason I can't yet fathom, we lost him anyway.

I hope someday I will understand why he left us so early, but for now, my only hope is that nothing we love is ever really lost. I have to believe that Eddie is waiting for me in the way Dan's poem so beautifully expresses.

I love you, Eddie. I wouldn't trade a second of the time we had together for all the money in the world. The last thing I said to you was "See you in the morning."

And I believe I will.

Do Dogs Go to Heaven?

My little Eddie passed away, no more to breathe a sound.
I held him for the last time, then entombed him in the ground.
Day and night I wept so much, in tears I thought I'd drown.
I searched my soul for comfort, but no peace therein was found.

In great despair, I hit my knees and then began to pray.
"Father will I ever see, my dog again someday?"
I raised my eyes and saw an angel standing near a gate.
I sensed an inner peace I'd never felt before that day.

The angel smiled and said to me, "Oh woman of little faith!
God sees every bird that falls; He knows your Eddie's fate.
I have met your little dog, I saw him pass my way.
Your precious dog is still alive; he just walked through this gate.

Paradise is lovelier than you can comprehend.
No pain or grief, no tears or fears, and life will have no end.
God gave to man His only Son, to cover all his sins.
So why would God withhold from you, your pure and loving friend?”

The angel took me by the hand and said, "Now come with me.
A glimpse of paradise I'll give to you so you can see."
Through the gate and o'er the Rainbow Bridge we did proceed.
Through green valleys filled with flowers, rolling hills and trees.

“Wow, so this is paradise!” The place was filled with joy.
I saw my Eddie playing there, with dogs and cats and toys.
He also had some doggie treats, and food that he enjoyed.
He'd made a lot of new friends there, including girls and boys.

Then I saw a child come near, and hug my little mate.
She said to him, "I love you so," and kissed him on the face.
The angel said, "The child just crossed the Rainbow Bridge today.
Now she needs a little friend, to love and help her play.

God’s love for her would be enough, in that make no mistake.
But in His love, He knew full well, the child would want a mate.
This is why God called your dog unto this splendid place.
God’s entrusted her with him, ‘til you pass through the gate."

I pleaded, “May I hug them both?!” The angel answered, “No!
You’d violate a sacred site, and now it’s time to go.”
He led me back across the Bridge and through the gate to home.
He left me there with new-found hope and peace within my soul.

If someone ever asks what happens to a dog that dies,
Just give a gentle smile of joy and look them in the eye.
Take their hand and comfort them and tell them not to cry.
For dogs don’t die, they simply cross a bridge to paradise.

SHE'S BACK...

Wow. I really got behind on this blog. I'm going to try to do better. (Couldn't do much worse!)

Recent news: I just signed to do a new series for my COZY IN KANSAS publisher, Barbour. (A great group of folks, by the way!) This series will take place in a fictional Mennonite town. And yes, there will be some "mystery" in it! Stay tuned for more information.

Because of a space problem, I wasn't able to include it in the book. But...here it is. Hope you enjoy it. (If you haven't read THERE GOES SANTA CLAUS, there are a few references you won't understand.)

EPILOGUE

Journal Entry

I realized today that it’s been ten years since I started this journal. I began it on Christmas day, right after I told Amos I was pregnant with our first child. Goodness, ten years has certainly passed quickly. So many things have changed since then.

Hope and Zach spent that Christmas with us. But they were married before the next holiday. Now he is the assistant pastor at Faith Community. Ephraim says he will be retiring soon. I know Zach is his choice for a replacement. He won’t have any trouble being selected. Everyone loves him and Hope so much. Inez is certainly enjoying her role as grandmother to their two boys. I’m so glad things worked out for them.

Of course, one of the strangest things is the match up between Barney and Bertha. After Delbert was locked up, Bertha set out to change her life. Being under Delbert’s thumb had made her insecure and unhappy. Now she’s much more confident and interesting. Being happy has changed her on the outside, too. Funny how joy can affect us inside and out, isn’t it? Bertha is actually a rather attractive person now.

Isaac and Alma are quite content in their new profession. I know Dewey would be happy to know that they took over the store and are doing a great job of running it.

That Christmas ten years ago was Dewey’s last. He passed away the following April. I held his hand in the hospital as he crossed over. I’ll never forget how he suddenly opened his eyes, looked past me and said, “Why, there you are. I’ve been looking for you.” Then he drifted away. I’m convinced he saw Bitty holding out her hand to guide him home. I miss him terribly, but I know he is where he really wanted to be.

Ruby Bird has been gone about three years. Bert and Bonnie run the Redbird Café. It’s still the only restaurant in town. But we have a gas station now. Barney opened one a couple of years ago. He named it “Barney’s Gas and Go.”

Amos has been the sheriff of Stevens County for almost five years, and he is the most popular sheriff the county ever had. He loves his job and his deputies all respect him.

Pal is still with us, but he has certainly slowed down. He was so sad when we lost Miss Skiffins that we had to get him another cat. It wasn’t hard. Someone dumped off a batch of kittens near the road to town. They’ve all been adopted by Winter Break families, including our Miss Skiffins, Too. They are curled up together next to the fireplace sound asleep. I can hear her purring from here, and Pal has a silly smile on his face.

Well, it’s about time to get dinner ready. The kids are getting on their costumes for the play. Aaron and Mickey are playing angels. We named our boys after our fathers. We lost Aaron last year. Amos misses him, but we comfort ourselves with the knowledge that he had found the Lord before he died. My parents live in Wichita. They completed their mission in China and came back to the states to start a missionary training school. Now they send others out to the mission field armed with the years of experience they gained from their own ventures. They’re staying with us over the holidays. I can hear them arguing upstairs. My mother is telling my father that he needs to change his shirt so he doesn’t look like a bum. Some things never change.

Bitty, our daughter, is in the choir. She has a voice like an angel and will be singing a solo tonight. I can hardly wait.

The bookstore is doing very well. With three children, it’s nice to have someone who is so helpful and knowledgeable. Benjie took Isaac’s job when he and Alma reopened the store. I’ve offered him a full time job, and I think he’s going to take it.

Marion and Cecil have both passed away. I got the chance to ask Marion about the tapestry she painted and left here. All she would say is that she prayed over it and asked God to make it special. He certainly answered that prayer. It’s almost as if it changes along with the citizens of Winter Break. I could swear that Dewey used to stand behind Bitty as she sits on a bench waving at Amos and me skating on the lake. But now, he’s sitting beside her. And Emily and I have started to notice that the young man and woman who are skating near us on the ice look a lot like my Bitty and her son Charlie. They’re holding hands and looking lovingly into each other’s eyes. I wonder…

Well, gotta go. Time to get to the church. Tomorrow will be a busy day with all the guests that are coming. I’ll wait until after they leave to give Amos the news. Four children. That’s a nice, round number, don’t you think?

A NEW BEGINNING

Although none of us can completely change ourselves overnight, sometimes the beginning of a new year is a chance to set some new priorities. I encourage you to give God a chance to show you HIS plan this year. Many of us try to figure out what path sounds good to us and then ask God to bless it. And He might do it. He is a good God - a God of blessings. But has it occurred to you that He may actually have a plan of his own? Jeremiah 29:11 tells us that God does have His own ideas about our lives. Please believe that no plan of yours will ever give you the kind of peace and satisfaction that finding God's will for your life will bring.

How about this for a New Year's prayer? "God, this year please show me Your plan for my life. I want to follow Your way - not my own. I lay it all down. My plans, my desires, my thoughts and my visions. Please fill me with your vision and help me to find the destiny you have for me."

If you mean it, I promise that your life will never be the same.

To all of you who've written to tell me you enjoy my books - thank you from the bottom of my heart. It means more than you know. Sometimes readers think authors don't want to be bothered. You're wrong. Bother us. We love it. This past year, I've received some of the sweetest e-mails and letters from people who've enjoyed one of my books. I treasure every one. You've blessed me abundantly, and I pray many, many blessings back to you.

May 2009 be a year of manifestation in your lives. I pray you will see God move in those areas you've been believing for - whether it's the salvation of a loved one, the healing of a relationship, a financial turn around, finding a spouse, having a child, or simply learning to love yourself. You know, you can't love others the right way unless you learn to love yourself. And you can't love yourself unless you find out how much God loves you. We all need to quit being afraid of God and realize that He's given everything to bring us into a relationship with Him. Those who come to Him through Christ become His sons and daughters. I hope this year you will begin to realize just what that means - that God isn't mad at you. He loves you unconditionally, as a perfect and loving Father. There is nothing to fear when you find your way into your Father's arms.

I can hear a few of you saying..."Uh, oh. She's getting preachy!" LOL! Well, you're right. I think our time is growing shorter. I'm less interested in selling books and much more interested in letting people know that without God - you have nothing. Nothing that will mean anything in the long run. With God, you have everything. (Smile)

So, here's to a new year. Bring it on, God! I trust you!

This evening I learned that this means I must share six things about myself that people don't know.

Hmmmmm. Here goes:

1. I actually helped to catch a murderer. Actually, a pair of murderers. Short story: A friend of mine worked as an apartment manager. The owner of the property was murdered. I was on the phone one night with my friend when she told me about a couple who were moving out of the apartments. Something felt wrong to me about it so I told my friend to hang up the phone and call the police. Although she didn't want to do it at first, she finally decided to call. The police came and checked out the couples' trailer. Lo and behold, they found some of the owner's property. Oh...and the murder weapon!

2. I hate the color orange. No idea why.

3. I have perfect pitch.

4. I have a secret longing to play the banjo.

5. I love bluegrass music. And Rich Mullins. And The Lettermen. And Marty Robbins. And Secret Garden. (I'm very eclectic...)

6. And finally....I detest Lima beans!

Is that enough information for you, Aston??? LOL!

I've mentioned more than once how much I love Barbour's covers. My newest cover is my favorite so far. It's for a book that will be released to the Heartsong Mysteries Book Club in November.

I will be signing copies of COZY IN KANSAS, a 3-in-1 book that contains the first three Ivy Tower's mysteries. And although book club books are usually only released to the public six months after they've gone through the club, Barbour is going to make copies of THERE GOES SANTA CLAUS available at my book signing. I will post more details later.

WHY MYSTERY?

With so many genres out there, sometimes people wonder, "Why mystery?" In other words, what is it about writing mysteries that some authors love? Truthfully, there aren't a lot of mystery writers who drift into other genres. What's the hook? Why are mystery writers and fans so fanatic?

Some enthusiasts will tell you that mysteries present a puzzle, making them interactive and engrossing. That's true. There aren't very many other kinds of stories that are specifically geared to pull readers into the plot the way mysteries do. Clues, red herrings, heroes and villians - readers of mystery look for these important road signs that may point toward or away from the ultimate prize: the solution. Can you guess "whodunnit" before "the end" or will the author lead you down a rabbit trail and surprise you? It's always rewarding to figure it out, and good mystery authors will give you that chance. Nothing will cause a reader to throw a book against a wall faster than an unfair puzzle - clues that mean nothing or a solution that comes out of the blue.

All of these elements are a vital part of mystery. But for me, there's something more important. The struggle of good versus evil. Evil happens. Someone is killed. Now a sleuth is offered a chance to right a wrong - to bring an evildoer to justice. Many times our hero is someone who has no actual training - an amateur sleuth. We've now moved into the David versus Goliath realm. If our author offers us a protagonist we can identify with, suddenly we see ourselves thrust into battle. We have the chance to outwit the bad guy and bring him to his knees. What a great opportunity and what a good feeling!

When we close the last page of a good mystery, we believe that we could do just what the protagonist did. If he or she could go up against the worst evil imaginable - we can too.

It's Luke Skywalker against Darth Vader. Superman against Lex Luthor. Sarah Conner against the machines. Sherlock Holmes against Professor Moriarty. Yet our hero looks like us. Talks like us. Is us. And it feels great.

Mystery is the place where we see the hero in our hearts displayed between the pages of a book. And even though in the real world we're bombarded with stories of inhumanity and horror - when we read a mystery, for just a little while, the bad guys lose and the good guys win.

And that means that we win.

A beautiful lady is strolling the shores of Heaven today. She has done what "I can only imagine." She has looked into the eyes of Love and touched the face of her Savior. Although I wish she had finished out her time with her family, I rejoice in the knowledge that no matter what happens, the devil always loses and the children of God always win.

I never got to meet Kristy Dykes in person. I only knew her through an incredible blog kept going by her dear husband, Milton, after Kristy could no longer write her own messages. Through him and through all the previous messages written by Kristy, I was able to experience a life truly lived to its fullest. I saw a woman who knew how to pack every day with her special touch.

Kristy made me think about my own life. How many hours have I frittered away that could have been turned into something useful? And how many times could I have reached out and touched someone else's life the way Kristy was so eager to do?

Those of us who know God, know that Kristy has only stepped away from us for a while. She is walking along a beautiful beach somewhere, soaking in the SonShine - and waiting for the day when her loved ones will walk beside her. And someday I'll be able to walk up to her, introduce myself, and give her a big hug.

I look forward to that day.

Here's the cover for the third book in the Ivy Towers Mystery Series. Cool, huh? My son actually came up with the idea and then the wonderful cover artists at Barbour brought it to life. I love Barbour's covers! Some of the best in the business.

"In the Dead of Winter" will release to the bookstores and online on July 1st. "Bye, Bye Bertie," the second novel in the series, is out in the book club now. I'm not sure when "For Whom the Wedding Bell Tolls" will be out, but look for it in late summer or early fall. In November, the fourth and final Ivy Towers novel will release to the book club. It is titled, "There Goes Santa Claus." It was fun to write, and I think Ivy's friends will enjoy it!

Barbour has the most wonderful covers. I love them all. The cover for "For Whom the Wedding Bell Tolls" is in the pencil sketch stage, but it promises to be one of my favorites.

Most of those who joined Heartsong Presents: Mysteries! have received their first shipment. I can tell you from first hand knowledge that not all of us have found that wonderful package in our mail box yet. But I'm sure it will appear any day now.

Who Are You Writing For?

Having been involved with authors for many years, I've come up with a question that doesn't have an easy answer. The question is, who are you writing for?

Some authors will tell you clearly that they are writing what they want to write. They are expressing themselves. This is the mantra of many secular authors. Is that wrong? Probably not. Freedom of expression is something we cherish in a free country.

If you ask Christian authors who they're writing for, almost every single one will say, "I'm writing for God." Some of us rattle that off without thinking about it. But I wonder if it's true - or even right? You see, God doesn't need your words. He has His own, and His book was finished 2,000 years ago. And believe it or not, He doesn't need editing, nor will there be a sequel. He pretty much said it all in His first edition.

So, who are we really writing for?

I knew a man once who ran a shelter for homeless men. I worked at a Christian radio station, and we used our airwaves to support his mission. After being involved with him for some time, I began to get discouraged by the lack of results that came from working with his clients. For the most part, they took what they needed from the mission but had no real inclination to change. Most were either drug addicted or long time alcoholics. A large number of them were either mentally ill or so ravaged by drugs and alcohol that for the most part, when you looked into their eyes, there didn't seem to be anyone home. Finally, one day when were sitting in my office, I asked him a question. "Gene," I said, "out of one hundred men, how many do you actually help?" He considered my question and said, "Maybe one." Flabbergasted, I asked, "How can you keep doing this day after day?"

And then he said something I've never forgotten. "You do it for the one."

I think that's what writing should be for Christian authors. Don't write for God. Instead, ask Him: "Who is this book for, Lord?" And then wait for an answer. You see, I believe that our books can be "a word in due season" for someone. Someone who is waiting on a touch from God. Someone who needs to know that He knows them and that He loves them.

Jesus told parables, which were fictional stories with a purpose. With an enternal message. Why can't our stories be the same? Yes, we can and should entertain. And our work should be excellent because the most excellent God lives in us. But from now on, I intend to ask God who I'm writing for. Who has been praying for a personal visit from the Holy Spirit? And when I have that one person clearly in my mind, I'll start writing. Is it someone who was deserted by a father and is now afraid to trust Father God? Is it someone who needs deliverance from the effects of abuse? Or could it be someone who doesn't know how to forgive themselves for the past? Of course, there are thousands of people who are all looking for the same answer - but it's too difficult to write for thousands. Much easier to put one hurting soul inside your heart.

So, from now on, when I sit down to write, I intend to follow my friend Gene's advice and "Do it for the one."

And that's how I will truly be "doing it for the One."

The first books will release to the public from the Heartsong Presents: Mysteries! book club any day now. The excitement is building and everyone is excited! I am so thankful for Barbour Books and for my wonderful editor, Susan Downs. As we stand at the door of a brand new adventure, it is important to remember that success does not rest with us. It is dependant upon the plans and purposes of God. When we really understand that, it is easy to rest in peace and enjoy what is happening. Relying on our own gifts and talents causes fear and intimidation.

2008 is going to be a great year because God has a plan - and His plan is a good one for His people. I encourage you to look forward with great anticipation. Put this year into His hands and watch what He will do!

Getting Ready for a New Year

Another year is upon us. I'm the kind of person who believes in setting goals for every new year. Even though we can start implementing change anytime, I think a new year provides us with a good opportunity to release our faith. That being said, my New Year's resolutions are a little different this year. Instead of trying to stop certain behaviors, I am determined to release more of God in my life. We are full of the very life of God. God is the creator of the universe, and his creative life flows inside of us. I heard someone say that because we are His children, we have God's DNA. When I heard that, I realized that this is why the Bible says nothing is impossible for us. I am determined to allow more of God to flow out of me in 2008. Every book I write will be dedicated to Him. And I will ask for His words to flow through each manuscript. I want HIS annoining. I am asking that He will use my books to touch people for His kingdom. More of Him - less of me.

2008 is a year of manifestation. Things I've prayed for are happening. Things I've believed for have moved out of the realm of faith and into reality. I know God has plans for me. My job is to stay out of the way and let Him do whatever He wants to do.

In the end, there is nothing more precious we can give to God besides ourselves. You see, God has a creative plan for your life, and there is no one else in the world who can play the part He has for you. You may think that you will lose something if you put down your own plans and dreams, but it isn't true. What happens is that you will finally become the person you were created to be. It's in losing your life that you will find it.

Another New Cover - and A Request

I had a few other things I was thinking about posting, but my attention has been somewhere else the past week or so. An author I've never met, Kristy Dykes, is facing a mountain. If you believe that mountains can be moved, please pray for her and her family.

"In the Dead of Winter" will be one of the books sent out as a selection in the new "Heartsong Presents - Mysteries" book club. The book club begins in January, 2008. Then each of my books will be released separately to book stores six months after they go through the club. "Winter" will be followed by "A Bird in the Hand" and "For Whom the Wedding Bell Tolls." 2008 promises to be an exciting year! I'm recovering from foot surgery and am now "on wheels." I yearn for the day I will be "vertical" again! But my "incarceration" is allowing me lots of time to write. I am finishing book two in my "Icy Curtis Mystery Series." "Ashland" will go to the publisher by the 15th of October. In the meantime, I am going through galleys of "In the Dead of Winter." "For Whom the Wedding Bell Tolls" is due to Barbour by January 15th, and SOMEWHERE in the next few months, I will be doing some editing on "A Bird in the Hand."

Although God didn't put me in this wheelchair, He and I will use it to my advantage by getting everything done on time. He's good at turning things that look bad into something good - IF WE LET HIM!!! Unfortunately, many people just stop when something goes wrong and never get on the other side. With God ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE! Of course, there is more to that scripture. It continues: TO HIM WHO BELIEVES! I encourage you to take the lemons in your life and make lemonade! God has a plan for you, and although our plans can fail, His never will. Be sensitive in the Spirit and find the path God has for you. You will find great peace and joy when you exchange your small plans for God's great, big wonderful plan!

Sometimes things just happen...

Just when you think your life is pretty well organized...something happens to change things. Well, I guess things haven't really changed. Let's just say I'm having to do a little rearranging.

A sore ankle that was just irritating at first, has turned out to be a little more inconvenient than I'd ever imagined it could be. Turns out I've torn a tendon and will have to have surgery. The doctor will not only be repairing my tendon, she will also be straightening my foot. Who knew it was crooked?

In the long run, things will turn out okay. I have two books to write. The first, titled "Ashland," is the sequel to "Malevolence." I'm pretty close to finishing that one. When it's completed, I will finish "For Whom the Wedding Bell Tolls," the last book in my "Ivy Towers Cozy Mystery Series." I will be jumping from a supernatural thriller to a cozy mystery. It's almost like have a split personality. I have to be careful to keep the humor out of "Ashland" and the demons out of "For Whom the Wedding Bell Tolls!" Thankfully, I seem to be able to wear the two hats without too many problems. I'm told that I will have to keep weight off my foot for three months. YIKES! But, it will certainly give me lots of time to write. I'm actually looking forward to that. The rest of it will be inconvenient at times, but it's doable. I know I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Some people would tell a person in my position "Well, God knew you needed time to write, so he let this happen to you." Rubbish. My Father doesn't go around crippling his children because he wants them to do something. I tore my tendon because I didn't take care of myself the way I should have. It's not God's fault. It's mine. All I can do now is correct the error of my ways. And God's part? He will take care of me, keep me safe, and help me heal. You see, that's who He is. He's not out to get anyone. He isn't giving you cancer or causing tragedy because He's trying to get your attention. I mean, He's God. He can part the Red Sea, talk from a burning bush, or send an angel to give you a message. I doubt He's worried about how to get your attention. He's pretty well got that down.

So, God will turn this situation around and work it with the other parts of my life to bring about something good. Why do I believe that?

That's who I am.

Because that's who I AM is.

My path as a writer has been full of potholes and rocks, and I've stumbled around quite a bit. Hopefully, things have smoothed out some, but the twists and turns I've encountered were confusing enough that I almost quit to take up something easy...like tight-rope walking.

I was forty-five when I decided to tackle my first novel. I did it because I'd heard a minister preach about gifts and callings. He said that if you went back to what you did naturally as a child, you'd discover what God had gifted you to do. I thought about that quite a bit. I rejected the notions that I was to be the world's best mud-pie maker or that my penchant for dressing my little brother up like a girl and forcing him to endure my pretend tea parties would lead me to a meaningful career. The only thing left was my passion for literature which led me to create notebooks full of teenage, angst-ridden verse. Add that to the fact that for years my husband had been prodding me to quit trying to do everything (cross-stich, painting, gardening, sewing, singing, playing the guitar, endless craft projects...the list goes on and on) and find one thing to concentrate on. According to him, if I followed his advice, I might actually accomplish something! With encouragement like that, what else could I do but throw myself into writing a novel?

I'd stopped writing many years earlier due to an unfortunate experience in high school. An assignment in English, to write three poems, had resulted in an accusation (in front of the entire class) that my work was the result of plagerism. (It wasn't.) Instead of realizing that my writing must have had some redeeming features for the teacher to assume the worst, I was heartbroken and humiliated. So much for writing.

But here I was, thirty years later, composing the great American mystery novel. (It wasn't, by the way. I had no idea what I was doing.) After several years of studying, book reviewing, and massive amounts of editing, I entered the fray again. The results were quite underwhelming. I'll save the stories of all the things that went wrong for another entry. There isn't enough daylight left for any of us to get through it all, and it's only early afternoon.

I came the the conclusion one day that spending the rest of my life in front of a computer was a really stupid thing to do unless God was in it, so I decided that God was going to have to send me a really clear message or I was finished. The dedication and time a career in writing exacts is too much unless He has a plan. God and I have a thing about snow (again, for a later post), so I asked him to make it snow during a certain week that I picked. Now, living in Kansas, you may think this wasn't a tough enough test - but let me finish. First of all, it hadn't snowed all winter - maybe a spit or two, but not enough to count. In fact, the past several winters had been awful for those of us who love the white stuff. Oh, and one other thing. It was April. I think back now, and I feel a little faint. But I was as serious as serious gets. The week began and nothing happened. In fact, no snow was in the forecast at all. And then...

Since I'm obviously still writing, you know what happened, don't you? I woke up on Friday morning to nine inches of snow. Yes, nine inches. I found out later that the last time it snowed in Wichita in April was forty years earlier.

So, I continue to spend copious amounts of time in front of my computer. I wish I could say that everything has gone smoothly since my frozen visitation...but I'd be lying.

I'll take time one of these days to write about the mistakes I've made and the strange paths I've gone down waiting for something good to happen in the weird and wonderful world of writing, but for now I have to go.

I have some writing to do....

My first blog! Okay, not my first. I've started this blog more than once, but for some reason, I wasn't happy with those first efforts. I'm not sure I'm going to be satisfied with this one, but I've come to the conclusion that I've got to just grit my teeth and go for it. So, here goes....

I have two books in print right now, well three, but I don't really talk much about the nutrition book I wrote eons ago. It seems to be circling around in space somewhere, but it's pretty specialized, and only for people who are caring for an older loved one. If that's you, you might like it. If it isn't you, well nevermind. "Malevolence" is my "scary" novel - my attempt to be Frank Peretti, Jr. And "Sinner's Song" is a mainstream mystery, set in the world of the homeless. My newest venture, however, is totally different than "Malevolence," and somewhat different from "Sinner's Song." You see, I "accidentally" fell into the world of cozy mystery...and I just love it.

My agent told me that Barbour Publishing was starting a cozy mystery line. Now, I'd reviewed cozies and had a little knowledge about them - but not enough to write the proposal she told me I needed. But thanks to Barbour's detailed instructions about what makes up a cozy, I felt I had just enough information to write a proposal that would fool them into thinking I knew what I was doing. I wrote the proposal, sent it to my agent, and lo and behold, two weeks later, Barbour accepted it! I was overjoyed! However, then I had to actually finish the thing. Could I pull this off? Could I pretend to be a "cozy" writer? I sat down to write the rest of the book and found that I was actually having fun! Of course, I thought I was much more clever than my husband did, who got really tired of hearing read certain passages over and over. He had the patience of Job.

I finished the novel, and although I really wasn't sure if Barbour would like it, I sent it to my wonderful, wonderful editor, Susan Downs. Would she hate it? Would she ask me why in heaven's name I thought I could write cozies? I still have the e-mail she sent me on the 4th of July, telling me how much she liked "The Dead of Winter." When I read her e-mail, I cried. After years of searching for "my place," I finally felt that I'd found it. It's a wonderful feeling.

Barbour will be publishing a three book series based on "The Dead of Winter." After going through the bookclub, they plan to package the series and put it in retail stores across the country. They recently accepted a proposal for a new series, but I don't have the details about that yet. More about it later.

You know, writing is a strange profession. There are ups, and downs, and downs, and downs, and.... You get the idea. Over the next few weeks (and months if I can continue to come up with any fresh ideas), I'll share what I've learned over the past several years. My stories will contain all the mistakes I've made and disappointments I've endured - and there are a lot of both. Maybe someone will learn from them. I hope so. But most of all, I will share with you something even more important: that God truly loves you, and that He has a plan for your life. A good plan. Nothing you will ever do is more important or more fulfilling than finding that special path He has prepared for you.
